This book presents a set of essays by Taiwanese and French researchers, addressing the processes of internal change unfolding in primary and second-tier Asian cities, Four main themes are discussed: ‘culture-led regeneration projects', ‘dynamics of second-tier cities', ‘urban redevelopment and land issues', and‘new urban spaces of regulation, associational life, and civic action'.
The authors observe from various perspectives and scales how macroforcescombine locally with historic patterns and multiple contingencies. Their analysis goes beyond physical change, encompassing less visible transformations of urban space and new internal boundaries produced by the specific modes of integration of migrant workers.
